272 Y-Block distributor

Isn't there supposed to be a little retainer clip inside the rotor on the 272 Y-Block? I recall from an earlier replacement a problem with the rotor spinning/bouncing...and rounding out. Mine won't stay in place and the new rotor didn't come with one. It rounded out as well.:(

Yes my original '55 distributor still has the clip. It keeps the rotor from oscillating as the shaft turns. I would highly recommend finding one if you plan to continue using the '55 distributor.
A multitude of problems can occur from operating the engine without the little clip.
Distributor contacts will wear prematurely and probably corrode.

throws shaft off center, possibly prematurely wearing the distr shaft bushing.

I am dead in the water. I bought what I thought was the right rotor button. No fit. It binds against the distributor cap when installed. I was told the distributor was identified as a 57 and bought a different button. Hole too big. Here's a pic of the distributor. Has 12127 stamped on it. ANY HELP? I am DOA because of a $5 part..

If you can't find the spring clip, you can use a small piece of plastic shim stock tucked inside the rotor. I've done that several times, works good. Paul Selfe.

The 49-56 V8 rotor is different than the 1957-72 rotor. We stock them both.....plus the correct caps, condensers, points, etc. we have the little clip that was used on the 49-54 distribtrs.....I think its also used for 55-56 too.
