260 or 289?

Is there a way to determine which engine I have without tearing it down? Is there some marking? If so, where? Vintage is 1964. Thanks, Dave H.

My 2 cents,,, All 260's have a 5 bolt bellhousing, early 289's may have either. Most 260's have red valve covers,,,289's have that # cast under the VC.,,and may have gold VC.
There are other ways I'm sure, but that is my understanding.

Something about water pumps too?

some 260's and early 289 came with Factory chrome valve covers. most of these that I have owned or have seen were in Falcons, and very early Mustangs.

It sounds like you may not be able to be 100% sure if it's a 260 or 289 since I think they did share block numbers too. Why not just pull a head or the oil pan and measure the bore. The difference between 3.8" and 4.0' is a lot, so should be able to get a ballpark measurement from the bottom.

Wow, thats a lot of info. Thanks everyone. Still, it may be difficult from the outside to make the identification. Both are 5 bolt. The one that I am sure is a 289 is the original engine in my early '64 Comet Caliente,4V. I may have the title somewhere for the other car that the other engine came from, and if it turns up I should be able to figure it out from the VIN.

anyone ever bore a 260 to 289.i have and had no problem but some do from what I have read.

I have read that you shouldn't bore a 260 that far. Your's probably had some thick and centered cylinder walls.

I couldn't picture boring any engine .200" over.

jahns made a 3 7/8 for the 260 that's is big as ive seen.i once read not to bore them over .100 but cant remember where.

The book I have says 63 had a 260 and 289,but for 1964 didn't have 260.
my guess you have a 289
I bought a 63 fair lane and had 6 bolts and wanted the engine and trans for another car. I removed the starter and wanted to see the code.
To my surprise it had D7 That's a 1977 302 block.
So you may want to check the code.

64 1/2 Mustangs had a 260 V8, but may have been the only '64 Ford product with a 260.
