can anyone tell me if my 24 stud engine will fit the 21 stud gearbox in my '35 coupe ? i want to use the 35 but engine is trashed and the hotrod is getting a rest so engine is doing nothing ..

'35 transmission will bolt right up to '38-'48 24 stud engine with integral bell housing. The '49-'53 8ba engines require a Merc or truck bell housing.

It's not really a requirement here but always nice to give a little introduction, some details on what you are working on and maybe give your approximate location in your avatar.

Yes it will fit.32to 48 transmissions are interchangeable.Phil
Yes, the bolt patterns are the same but you "can" have interference with a later/larger pressure plate and a 1932-34 series "18" transmission case. Ford moved the clutch through-out shaft rearward and enlarged the inner circumference of the case starting with the 1935 series "48" cases.

thanks for the reply's ,
i didn't realise it was my first post on here , too many forums with similar web pages !

i am originally from the london area but now live in lincolnshire countryside in the uk ,where life is pretty laid back , mainly a hotrodder but enjoy all manner of anything mechanical thats old . currently have my A sedan hotrod with early ford running gear , a ford mk1 transit van pop top camper awaiting restoration , a ford mk3 zephyr which is undergoing a full resto with modern running gear and a 305 chevy which will be a sleeper , and have just bought the '35 5 window rumble seat coupe which is supposed to be my ride while i redo the other projects ...
anyway back to the question in hand , will i need to swap over the clutch stuff to fit the 24 stud engine ? is there a difference between lhd and rhd stuff ? anything else i might need to do ? just don't want to take the hotrod apart if i have to buy in stuff to make it all fit the 35 .

Welcome to Fordbarn.

About the only thing I can think of re: LHD Vs RHD is the clutch operating lever, everything else is the same including the handbrake attachment.

Any clutch and pressure plate should fit the 35 box. I like the 9in. setup because it's lighter and will stand all the hp a street flathead will make. 10in is alright but a little heavier. I wouldn't use the big truck 11in. setup. way to heavy. Walt

thank you everyone , yes my 35 box is rhd ,the model A is lhd , will let you know how i get on , i will do it this week while i am on holiday break .

paul .

Paul, thanks for coming back with an intro and welcome to the Fordbarn. It would be interesting to see some pictures posted of your car. Are you possibly a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club there? I have met some of the members who live in England and even had rides in some of their cars. They would be a valuable resource for you on information and parts.

Hi. 35, nice coupe.

Looking at the pics of the hotrod and the coupe, I'd say leave the rod alone. You'd be surprised at what V8 parts are kicking around here in the UK. You could probably get that motor fixed up and running again for not too much money. There are a pair of cast iron heads on ebay UK right now. Pistons are around. I have a set of +.060 dometops I could sell you.

I don't know much about the pump in head motors, but I have run a pilot motor on and off in various cars now for yonks. They come up for sale from time to time too, and could be fitted to your car very easily, as could any 59A type motor.

Mart.

Nice 35! The hot rod motor will fit, the only issues you'll have will be
You will not be able to run that fan set-up [no room]
Bottom radiator hoses will not line up; use 8BA bottom hoses
You'll need to use different top radiator hoses; there is a recent thread on the barn detailing this application in a 36.
Unless you want to build a new exhaust system, just use the original system that is in your coupe.

hi mart , trouble is , i did all my cash buying the car  been trying to sell the rod for 16k but wrong time of the year so its being laid up for a while so makes sense to use the motor on a temporary basis , also gives me an excuse with swmbo not to sell it ;) the original will get rebuilt in time and i do have a pilot motor that is also awaiting a rebuild so plenty of options but no cash ....

been having a measure up and looks like the hoses off the rod will all fit the 35 , going to put the dynamo onto the engine off the 35 and will make up the exhaust if i need to , its a lot of messing about which i really didn't want or need at this moment in time ,but it will get me behind the wheel of the car for this year which has got to be worth all the hassle don't you think ?
