24 Stud Canadian head identification

I got a pair of what I was told were NOS 24 stud Canadian heads. A friend showed a friend who said he thinks they might be repops because they appeared to be fly cut. I went back the next day and spoke with the guy I bought them from and asked him. I made it clear I wasn't upset and was fine with them being repops. He said there is no way, he got them out of a collection with a bunch of other rare/old flathead stuff and speed equipment (which he had).

More than anything I am curious what I have.

Here are the numbers/marks

c7ra-6050-b on the left front

NSN - in between the stud holes under the water neck
MADE IN CANADA - bottom front

2 - on the back below the water neck

j207b done by hand on each head, top right on the back

I greatly appreciate any help with this.

Thanks
- Kevin

C7RA-6050 = Ford of Canada part number for heads. The "fly cut" marks appear to be where some casting flash was cleaned-up crudely with grinder. Nice heads! DD

Kevin-

They "might" be Canadian heads and "maybe" not. During the late 1940s and early 1950s Wieand made a series of faux Canadian heads nicknamed "cheater" heads for stock cars that wanted an "edge" in their stock car racing. The name Wieand can be found in small print on the backside of the intake neck. It doesn't take much to remove the name. The pictures below are cheater heads.

Thanks flatheadfan. I know about the Weiand's but they all just said "canada" right? Not made in canada like mine. On the backside where they would say Weiand mine has a "2"

The C7RA heads of the original poster, are indeed factory Canadian heads. They are high compression. The Weiand cheaters are a cruder casting, the C7RA lettering and CANADA, are much bolder, and are yet higher compression again; the combustion chambers are the same as the Weiand finned heads.

You're a lucky guy, these are original C7RA Heads. I have a set of Weiand reproduction heads, and all the original factory letters and numbers have been removed from Weiands Patterns or Moulds.

I can't find anything online about those other numbers. maybe the old man put them on there. I was pretty excited to get them, and boy did I get a deal!!

The other numbers you refer to is on all the C7RA's I've seen. If you check it out, you'll see they're actually cast into the head; therefore those numbers were scratched into the mould before heads were cast. Maybe something to do with their foundry system?

Oh ok, thanks Brian!

Yes, genuine...every detail is sharper and better than the Weiands, which have a kind of hand-carved look to them and of course have Weiand cast on upper edge...
I think the Weiands actually exist with several levels of lettering...they may have started out with complete or nearly complete original type markings and then received a reminder that Ford had 10,000 lawyers...
The Canadian ones are slightly higher compression than the iron heads of the period (another iron version of the C7ra family was essentially same as our 50A-B), presumavbly to bring power back up from the losses to aluminum conductivity.

Thanks Bruce! Like I said I would have been ok with them being re-pops but having the genuine article is always better.

Anyone know what the compression ratio is with these heads on a stock engine? Anyone ever mill ".050-".060 off to raise the c/r? How well do they perform compared to Navarro heads?

The US heads come in pairs with different part numbers for each side (6050 being the left). In Canada the same part number was used on the left and right side, for the heads you have. Your heads were also offered in cast iron with a suffix of "-A", with a lower C.R.
C7RA-6050-B, Volume CC=69.5-70, 3-1/16 C.R.=6.8 to 1 with pressure=120 at cranking speed, 3-3/16 C.R.=7.2 to 1 with pressure=125 at cranking speed.
