239 flathead running rough

I have a 1950 239 that I put in my 51 f1. Motor is completely stock. Rebuilt the Holley carburetor/ new cap and rotor/ new plugs. The motor runs but seems to be running really rich. The jets are 51. The plugs seem to be carbon fouled. Tried messing with the timing a little but there is no timing marks on the pulley. Runs ok at idle but when u try and give it a quick throttle it bogs down. Suggestions?

Depends where you got your rebuild kit and how you rebuilt it. Was it running like this before you worked on the carb. ken ct.

Is there a chance that you unknowingly misplaced one of the tiny parts inside the carb, like the little ball held in place by a little spring clip inside the accelerator pump? Did you replace the power "economizer" valve? Do you have or can you borrow and install another carb to see if things improve?

Another idea is to install a 2 barrel Holley94 carb that goes on the 8BA engine. Those original Mercury "teapot" carbs can be difficult to touchy. I once installed one on my 53 Merc engine and it ran great.

What was in the kit??? rubber type accelerator pump, rubber tipped inlet needle,7.5 power valve. All not good parts = China made kit ?? Jets slightly big. ken ct

Carb kit was from napa. It had new accelerator pump, needle, gaskets, power valve. Never had the motor running before hand. Pulled it from a wrecked 50 ford. Firing order is correct I believe. Not sure if it's timing carb or both.

You didn't answer my questions. What you told me means nothing.give me specificks on what you put in there.ken ct.:)

Did u read my reply Ken, I put in exactly what I wrote. Accelerator pump, inlet needle, power valve.

When you rebuild a carb it is best to get the COMPLETE and correct kit and then carefully take the carb apart, clean it and reassemble using the correct parts supplied in the kit. Since you got that carb from junkyard car there is a good chance that it may not be complete if it was taken apart previously. You may want to consider sending it out to a professional to make it 100% correct and functional. It's worth it in the long run. Ken and some other folks on Fordbarn are pros at carb rebuilding.

No you didn't reply to his question. he wants to know if the kit is chinese, not if it comes from napa. Chinese kits have inferior parts and the jets are not accurate.
