223 Six Thermostat

I am ready to re-install a new T-stat on my 55 F-100 223 six, however my shop manual does not provide an order of installation regarding the gasket and T-stat. Is the gasket installed prior to the stat? I think it does but would like confirmation from someone who has done this before. Thanks. Steve

Here's a video, yes it's a V8 but it's all the same.
He's working 1 handed and drops it twice (haha) but he puts it in the right way and the 302 is nice looking.
The thermostat goes in the same way on your 223 six, the side w/ the spring faces into the block. The thermostat sits in the flat recess/groove for it and then the gasket goes on, with a bit of sealant.

Done it recently. Broke a housing bolt in the block... dont wanna remember that.
X2 on dmsfrr's words plus sealant on the bolts threads themselves. The bolts go right through the block and are in contact with the water (hence freezing) so there is the possibility of a leak.

put in a 180 degree thermostat, that one will get the engine up to the best operating temp to prevent carbon and sludge build up, and get best combusting and fuel mileage, also it will let your heater put out the necessary heat to keep you warm on cold days and nites

There are thermostats with different size openings. The one with a bigger opening will provide better cooling.

Great to hear.
When I found I wasnt running a stat I didnt pay much attention and kept busy with other issues I had to solve (spark related). When I finally threw it in it made a huge dif on the way the car warmed up, idled and ran. It is a must have due to the heat interchage between intake and exhaust manifolds. As soon as the fuel/air mix gets hotter, the better.
Did you have a freezed bolt?
I did, on the stats housing and on the waterpump.
Its hard to solve those given the tight space to work in even with the radiator off.
Keep it going.
Regards

The stat that came with the truck decided to stop working after reinstalling my radiator Fortunately, none of the bolts were frozen and when I installed the new stat, I placed some anti-seize compound on the bolts. Although it was a bit tight area, what helped was removing the fan.
