Does anyone know if any of the head studs on a 1934 21 stud engine go into a water passage ? If so, which ones ? Thanks FordBarn.

Almost all of them do. I would have to look at a block to be sure but there MAY be one on each end near the top and the two center ones do not go thru.

May I ask why you need to know?

Chris.

when i get home i will look at my 35 engine and let you know for sure. it will take me a couple days to reply though

Chris is right. Most of the studs plug water holes.
Coat them with Peratex #2 or use the special stud sealer made for the job.
Put a little in the holes first and work it into the threads in the block. Expect a couple to leak. If they do don't panic, just pretend you don't see them. They'll stop after a while.

Chris, Are you stating fact ?

I have worked on Flat Heads off and on for more then 50 years. I took apart a '36-21 stud engine a couple of monthes ago and it is at the machine shop right now. I removed all the studs and chased all the threads. Most of the stud holes do go clear thru to the water jackets. I just can not remember if there may be one on each end that do not. I do know one of the middle ones and may be both do not go into water. I always seal all the studs with permetex anyway, reguardless if they go into water or not.

My question is why do you need to know? I have never been asked this question before. If you could tell us, may be we could understand what you are trying to do and be of a little more help.

Chris.

I have two 34 non vented blocks and the head studs do not go into the water jacket, on a 35 block they do.

If you have a true 33-34 block NONE of them do . If your block has a vent it is 35-36 . I have numerous 33-34 types and they are ALL the same . None of the head studs go through to water or exhaust . Also none of my 33-34 blocks have cam bearings . This has been answered many times but most are describing 35-36 type blocks .

I agree..I checked all the holes on this 21 stud motor and NONE of them went into water..It was common that many original engines were "traded in" for a newer engine through Ford..They may have a 35-6 blocks and not aware of it..

I have a genuine 32 straight down drain 32 block and the studs have all been removed and none of them go into water or exhaust. must be a 35-36thing.
