2015 MARC National Meet

As I stated and I will again repeat...It will be a GREAT MEET, the "obstacles" are not there unless you place them their and the hotels and venues prices are more than fair prices with great choices, and will be outstanding., It is selling out for a reason, a clear reason that people are excited to go to a NEW meet in a new venue...with a great club going in a great direction...Despite the negativity that is "assumed". Hope to see many of your there for another great MARC National.....

I and four others hosted the 2011 MARC National Meet here in San Diego and I must say, I'd gladly do it again! It takes a huge amount of efforts to put the entire week of activities together but it is a blast! If I lived somewhere in the midwest, I'd gladly step up to the plate to host there but I can't see myself leaving sunny San Diego. Any meet, regardless of where it is, will have it's obsticles. We had a lot of criticism that we were hosting the meet all the way on the west coast and nobody would attend. Actually, more MARC members attended from the midwest and east than from California! There will always be folk that will complain about some part of a meet. I agree with Will, then you step up to the plate and do it. I like that MARC is trying to find different locations to host their National Meets. It gives everyone opportunitites to see different parts of the world, whether here in the beautiful USA or in Canada!

Rusty, I can tell you from HARD experience that it VERY difficult to find some one that has both the ability AND the willingness to host one of these events. It is SO easy to complain from behind a computer about what someone ELSE has made a decision and commitment to do, rather than pitch in and actually contribute to the very idea that is proposed. You and I are friends and you know this is NOT a confrontational comment, but it is just DAMN hard to sit by and watch others complain about what other people ARE willing to do, or their method when NO ONE else has the testicles to undertake.

So that we are clear here about my intentions, ...I am/was not complaining. I had already sent an e-mail which had not been answered. Therefore I was asking a question here for someone else that KNOWS the answer to my question based on their personal experiences.

Now with that said, maybe part of my frustration (which conveyed into my postings) is one of the individuals that has been answering here has also told me things in the past which I trusted him on (...more than just an occasion or two) which wound-up costing me substantial $$ out of my pocket. Therefore I am a little 'gun-shy' now when he gives me advice or tries to answer my question.

To Will/Gary, my point in asking this question is getting the correct answer from someone who actually knows what the facts are. Listen, we all understand, --and accept that each event will have 'pains' to overcome. When people can receive accurate information, ...then they will know how to counter those obstacles where they can work through them. While I am not here to speak for others but for me personally, I do not need a "cheerleader" from the sidelines trying to convince me how this event will be great. I honestly have been around this hobby long enough where I can make rational decisions on my own to determine what is best for me. I simply want to know what the facts are. So back to the original question, does anyone know what is involved to bring in parts to sell at a swap meet in Canada?

.

Brent/Rusty: My comment was not directed to any one person, just a general reflection of my opinion about 'Monday morning quarterbacks'. Brent, I know that you know the difficulties involved in such an undertaking, but many do not. In my old age, it is getting more and more difficulty to observe the sense of entitlement that everyone should receive their fair share, or have an easy time of something when they are not at all concerned about the planning, effort, time and money that was undertaken to provide that venue, service, product, etc. In discussions with some younger folks that would care to dispense some of their questionable knowledge in my direction, my reply is often: every one who is 70 years old has experienced being 40, 50 and 60, but nobody that is 40 knows much about being 70. To me, it's just a matter of perspective!

Go to the website http://marcniagarafalls2015.com/ ask any questions on the contact us page and all questions will be answered as soon as possible. Some more rooms have been opened up with a Falls view but they are "Deluxe Fallsview" and are at a higher rate than the standard rooms. Still at a reduced rate than what the Hotel complex charges normally. The Skyline still has rooms available and are cheaper than the Sheraton or the Crowne Plaza.
As for coming across the border with parts, I don't have an answer. Go to the Government web pages for customs and see if an answer can be found there. I have had to declare what I was taking across the border myself in the past, but I did not have any issues and never have I been pulled over for an inspection. Not that it could happen in the future and I know people that have gone through the inspection process.

Thank you for responding. I initially did ask on that page. I suspect they did not know the answer either ...which may explain the reason why I never received a response.

As for going to the government's webpages, thank you. I will do so but I suspect that the Canadian government is like any other government and will seize the opportunity to collect a fee as a tax if given the opportunity ...even if the selling is being done under the pretense of a private individual. The State of Pennsylvania has noted that pretense with the hobbyists selling at Hershey. :o

Thanks again for your reply.

RyanRex alluded to this back on post #21 about paying a tax or deposit on items brought into Canada. I know a guy who trailered his Model A into Canada, and had to pay this tax on the Model A and trailer. It was refunded later after he returned to the States with both the A and trailer, but it took some time to receive it. I guess Canadian Customs assumes that if you're driving your Model A, you don't intend to sell it in Canada, but if you're trailering it, your intention is to sell it as you have another way back home (i.e., the car pulling the trailer).

I never had that kind of an issue when I trailer my "A" to Michigan to go to the Gilmore. Just tell them at the border what you are doing and that your going to the Model "A" convention and I don't foresee any issues. The Customs offices on both sides have been informed that there will be cars trailered to the meet.
