2000 Ford Engine Problem, 5.4

I have a 2000 Ford F150, I am experiencing what I would call a lifter noise in the engine after it comes up to temperature. On the 5.4 engine, it's a duel over head cam engine, the problem I'm going to have is if I disassemble it is the engine not being up to temperature to find the problem. The engine has 180,000 miles on it. If you have any ideas, or have experienced the same problem, please contact me at KSbengals@aol.com or post a reply. Thanks, Bill

Pretty sure your engine is a roller lifter type. This engine I believe has problems relating to pressures causes the spark plugs to shatter, it's possible you may have a cracked spark plug causing a miss intermitently. With high miles on a truck it is more likely wear or a sludge problem in the oiling system. Keep in mind there is a lot going on in there, twice the normal, mine ticks a bit now and then. Could be your timing belts as well. On these the best thing to do is hook them up to the computer and ask the computer what's wrong. Tends to be cheaper and easier to let it self diagnose.

In 2000, a 5.4 in a pickup is a single overhead cam engine, the dohc was in the Lincoln navigator. There are no timing belts, there are chains. These are a very long life engine, 180K isn't alot of miles, at 250K you will see some wear in the cylinders. Your noise may possibly be the timing chain slides, they have a plastic coating on an aluminum frame and they will wear out, causing the hydraulic tensioner to reach the end of its travel and not have all the slack out of the chain(s), and they make a clicking noise. I fix crown vic cop cars for a living and this was a common problem on the 4.6 engines in 99 and 2000, especially if oil heavier than the recommended 5-20W was used. Pull the fan belt off and put a stethiscope on the timing cover just below the water pump and listen for the noise while the engine is idling

I had a noise similar to a tensioner, Sounded like it was coming from the front of the engine. It ended up being the PCV valve rattling.. Replaced it it and the noise is gone.

I have heard that these engines are known for blowing spark plugs out of their holes. Apparently the heads do not have many threads in them and the plugs have been known to blow out. I know some of the parts stores have a kit available to repair the threads.

my son has one in an 06.it has a noise as well.he had the plugs changed and 5 out of 8 broke off.they had done this before and had the tools to get the remains out.cost him 300 for a set of plugs.it also run rough.the more i hear about these engines the less i like them.just a bill of expense.
