2 tooth sector steering

Notice it was low on oil last week so added some and it looks like most of it drained out!? It has been steering fine. Can I just replace the gasket behind the endplate and can it be done in the car? I only added enough so that I could see it about 3/4 on an inch below the plug? Used the 600 weight from the vendors.

If you don't have the end tube you could add one that may help. They leak there and also out the sector through the bushing. You could also tighten the side screw a little. That may slow a leak out the bushing.

New gaskets, an endplate with tube above oil, and an O-ring between the sector and frame, or new bushings will really slow your leak. I think all except new bushings can be done in the car.

This is the end tube they are speaking of;

This is the "O" ring;

You might want to consider replacing the 600W lube with Penrite Steering Box Lube. Really viscous and won't leak out. But I'd do the fixes the other folks are suggesting first.

Does the horn rod then go through the oil retainer tube? How hard is it to get it back through it? Where does the o-ring and washer go that was pictured? I have Les Andrews book but he does not say anything about either of my questions. Thanks

Yes, the horn ring goes through the center of the tube. It fits fine, but I've only done a couple of them.

The O-ring goes on the sector shaft, then the thin washer, then the shaft goes through the frame and gets bolted in place. These have worked well on the steering boxes I've worked on.
