Ford used several different oil return locations for the bypass oil filter during the flathead years. The fitting circled in red is one of the types of oil return, you can use it for that.

Luke72... I have found that this Forum is a wealth of information and I am willing to bet old Henry would have hired most of our fellow members back in the day without question. :)

The port shown in the pan picture is, indeed an oil drain for the bypass type filter. It looks blank from the top but there is a small exit port on the lower side. You can see it with a mirror.
Mart.

Hey Luke - are you running a Fram - bypass style filter (like they installed at the dealer back in the day)? If you're running an aftermarket full-flow setup, you cannot return the oil to the pan. Just thought I'd mention it!

I'm mounting one of those

Hello cas3... speak some more about that restrictor please.

I am not running one and assume it impacts oil pressure readings... correct?

The brass fitting on the filter canister, that the oil line feeds into, is supposed to have a restriction of .060, about 1/16". It would certainly cause low pressure in the motor if missing. They are available new...sorry, I have no part number

In my opinion, the way almost all of these cars are used and maintained these days, a bypass filter is superior to a full-flow unit.

Carry on.

CAS3 is correct - you need a brass fitting with a .060 hole in the middle of it. If you don't have it installed, then oil pressure will be adversely impacted.

Luke 72,

Either using the port currently in the pan or getting one of the dip stick bosses with the return line cast into it is the acceptable way to run the line. Either way, you really should remove that dip stick boss and either weld nuts on the inside or, at least, re-sell it.

If resealing under that boss has never been done since new, it will most certainly be a source of oil leaks.
