1968 Parts Number

I have a part # here that I am trying to tell which car it fit. Part # C8GB-15A439-E. It is a red reflector for a quarter panel, but I am unfimulure with the GB as to make and model. Any help here would be great. Lost my old parts reference when my computer died in December, should have copied it to hard copy. Rod

I checked my '65-'72 Linc-Merc parts book - that one's a toughy. But GB is an engineering, casting, or production # for Comet/Montego. Ford often put such numbers on production assemblies that included several components for ease of assembly on the line, but that weren't available at the retail level; instead the pieces were sold separately.

It's my guess that it was an original '68 production side marker for a Comet/Montego. The actual part # for the rear red side marker light on a '68 Comet/Montego is C8GY-15A215-A. (note: I think '68 was the last year for the Comet name, it was the same body style as Montego, but lower trim level. Comet was reintroduced in '71 or '72 as a Maverick 'clone'.)

I don't have an Engineer # to Part # cross reference book to confirm though.

Thanks,,,, WOW,, That is intersting they used a different part number for production VS repmacement, but very beleivable. I was hoping it was from a more popular car than that, but nothing I can do to chage what it is. This was in a bunch of stuff I bought from an old body shop in 2002. There was alot of good stuff in that purchase, but most of it has been sold. I am dragging out what is left of the small pieces for a second look at them. Still have some bits and pieces of unknown sheetmeatal left, but none of it Ford that I know of. Rod

It's hard to say what Ford used either in production or as replacement parts sometimes. I think many companies still do it today - that is, they put many subassemblies together for easier and quicker production line performance only. Then post-production, those components will only be available as piece-parts. Good example might be a complete dashboard (wiring, gauges, lights, etc.) - all components are installed before the dash is put in the car on the line but you couldn't buy a similar dashboard except in pieces.

A box with the part # on it is best way to tell what it fits, of course. But if what you have is like many body shops that I've known, they probably took the stuff out of boxes & charged the item on the repair order & get paid for the item, whether they used it or not. Then comes time to return the items to the dealership for credit, they won't take 'em back because the parts are not in the box. Double-dipping used to be quite common, back when I worked Parts.

Just curious, does this overlap into the Cyclone also? I know the bodies were close to the same. Rod
