How do I tell what exact engine is in a Skyliner? I guess I need to look for a engine # somewhere on the engine? A code or something? Thanks for the help.

Your VIN will tell you what is supposed to be there, casting numbers and such will tell you exactly what it is. The first letter on the VIN is the engine code. C= 292, D, E and F = are all 312 codes of various HP and configuration. E = 2 4bbl, F = supercharger.

Thank you. The VIN is an easy decode but I don't know where to look for the "casting numbers and such" Please advise--thanks!

Casting #'s can be either by the dist. mounting hole or over the oil filter depending on what year engine you have. Go to Mummerts ford-y-block.com web site to decipher the casting #'s. A lot of good y-block info there. Also check out Y-blocksforever.com

You can't always find out what the engine is by the casting number - 292 and 312 engines use the same casting number, the difference is inside except for a marking on the crankshaft flange.

There were no FE's in 57 cars, Tbirds.

I found out it's a 292. I can buy the car for $28K. The body, interior, paint, top and chrome are all in a true #2 condition--top works perfect. Undercarriage and engine are in #3 condition. Engine has no problems just needs detailing but is still nice looking as is. Undercarriage needs cleaned up and exhaust is older but no holes.

Is it a fair price, a good deal or too much?

Thanks

I'm always looking at '57s for sale ...check Hemmings , Cars on Line , etc. , for comparables to use in your decision making . 28 k is certainly in the ballpark
but only you know the condition .
