I am looking into getting a 1957 fairlane 500 skyliner, ,my question is parts easy to get for these cars, i dont know what motor it has, it says 4.8L 292Cu. In. and also says 312 ci 245 hp it also has 3carbs strongberg 97s said he added new switches to: open roof and it opens and closes slowly, , looks in good shape, ,there is something going on with the switch on left hand side below key switch, , lokks like it added a panel or something, anyway i dont know what to think about the roof , if it will be a pain or not, , i am trading my 53 f100 and some cash dont know how much yet

Any info would be helpful
Thanks

Cant help with your question, but if that is the car you want... go for it. Just remember to test drive it good before letting the cash and the truck go.
Other members will advice better as to the parts availability.
Good luck.

Roofs were problematic on those cars. The added switches says there are issues with the sequencing and limit switches. There is a seperate manual for the roof operation that you will absolutely need or be able to supply for the technician that will be working on it. They do operate slowly, even in top notch condition and they work best with the engine running. The stock "Top up/dwn" switch is mounted on a little panel that is bolted to the bottom of the dash. Should be a light above it in the dash as well.

The VIN will tell you what engine is original, not up on Y blocks to know the differences between 292/312.

I don't know a way to decide the difference between a 292 and a 312 without taking parts off. A 57 312 should have G heads. The casting has the numbers on the bottom of the water outlets. I small mirror helps to see it. One other way if you happen to be under the car. Remove the flywheel cover, and look at the crankshaft flange in front of the flywheel. Both 292 and 312 have a half moon cut out on the flange. A 312 will also have a cast in part 180 degrees from there, with a dot about the size of an aspirin. The 97 carbs are nice to look at, but a factory or Blue Thunder four barrel intake with modern four barrel will be nicer to live with.

All V-8's for Ford passenger cars in 1957 had ECZ-G cylinder heads (272, 292 and 312), so you can't identify a 312 by the heads. Just by the crankshaft markings at the flywheel flange, main bearing caps (marked ECZ), and the bore/stroke.
