Could someone please tell me what alternative carburettor on a 4 barrell 312 Y Block with standard chrome air cleaner so I can close the bonnet on my 1956 T BIRD?

Is it the stock T-Bird chrome air cleaner or an aftermarket one? I believe that was the first production application of a Holley square bore carb. I think some Mercury 312s had Carter carbs.

There is no "alternative" 4 bbl. carb for a 56 TBird. All 56's used a teapot. If you are using a spacer than that could be your trouble.. 56 Tbird used a very thick gasket between the carb and manifold and that's all. Gasket is available from TBird parts suppliers.

The wrong air cleaner could also be the problem if you have a non-stock one. 55 and 56 TBird air cleaners are different (bottom part), mostly because of the automatic choke location.

Oops, sorry, for some reason (senior moment), I thought I read that as a 57 T-Bird.

nevermind......
