1956 Thunderbird Harmonic Balancer Replacement

I'm replacing the balancer and front crank seal on my '56 T Bird with power steering. Until I pulled the old balancer off this morning, I thought the Dayco PB1199N was the recommended replacement. I was very WRONG!!

I can't make out the Ford part # on the old one even after quite a bit of scrubbing! Hoping someone here can tell me which new part I need and where I can get it. (I tried to post pictures of both the old and new balancers but I failed!!) The height (or length) of the old balancer including the pulley for the power steering pump is about 7.5 inches. Clearly the '56 T Bird is different from the standard Cleveland Y block used in other cars.

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give me with this one !!

Cheers,

Dick Sponenbergh

The bird damper is unique. I just checked one bird supplier, the core charge alone is $250. Might not have one in stock. But try damper doctor, I’ve read good reviews on them, and I think the local bird guru used them. Got one on my 55. Redding CA, so shipping won’t be a killer.

Your balancer can be rebuilt if not too bad. Damper Doctor and Damper Dudes do this.

As miker said, the Tbird damper is unique to the bird and the sedan ones are different.

Hi, guys,

I talked to Ron at Damperdudes this afternoon, and it seems this really is my only option...and probably the best one.

Thanks for responding so quickly!! (Like most things with our old Fords, it's learning as we go!!)

Going to box up my old one tomorrow and ship it off.:)

Cheers,

Dick.
