Can i fit a modern style battery to fit the original battery box on a 56 ford fairlane? What size? I dont want to change the original rust free battery box. Thanks!

What do you mean by "Modern Battery"? NAPA, O'Reilly's and most all of the other popular auto stores have the battery you need. Just make sure to read the code which tells the manufacture date. Because these batteries are not in high demand, they sometimes sit on the shelf of a warehouse for months or even more than a year. There is not a lot worse on a battery than sitting on a shelf not being used.

If you mean a gel filled vice acid filled battery, they are available too. Not sure from where, but I know my friend just bought one for a '58 Edsel which takes the same battery as your '56 Ford. Best bet would be to Google it or if you live in a large city, check with a Battery Depot type outlet.

Any 12V battery will be a "modern battery" unless you are talking about the gel ones. If you know the size of the stock battery and the pole orientation, you can go to any place that sells batteries and get a replacement.

I have found that Wal-Mart has a very nice selection of batteries (at least in my area) and have bought three of them and they have not given me any problems.

It is a Group 29NF and they are available through Interstate Battery @ $109.95 check your local yellow pages for an Interstate dealer or online.

The 29NF is now a commercial battery. Came stock in 56/57 Tbirds. Ford did sell them at competitive prices (I have one in my TBird). Don't know if they still sell them.

Based on what I could find, looks like the the Motorcraft # is BXT65-650. - but double-check the specs here: http://machenry.com/documents/batteryspecs.pdf

Since the original tray was toast in my '56, I opted for a replacement '67-'68 Mustang battery tray, available on eBay & elsewhere for about $20. I'm using a Motorcraft BXT58R battery which was much less than the long, 29 series original battery.

Although not original the replacement tray & battery fits and looks decent.

If, as you said, you don't want to change the battery box, you will hve to stick with the original long and narrow battery. As I said above, they are commonly available most anywhere though you may have to order it. It most likely will be available in a local warehouse so that you will only have to wait a day at most.

Let us know what you did.

I cut a chunk of scrap plywood the thickness of the sides of the battery box. I now use a 24 F held down by a combination stock and aftermarket hold downs. The plywood makes it so the battery doesnt get its bottom cut by the sharp edges of the box. It also makes the hold down much more important because it now supports all the side load. It did pass inspection at the track. The correct size fits down in on the bottom. I wanted the bigger battery for mine.
