1956 fairlane engine knock and timing distributor

. . . From the bottom of the flange to the farthest edge of the gear is 4.908
Did you include the 'shoulder' on the bottom surface of the gear? (just making sure) That might be the missing difference.

Below is some basic info I have gathered from several forums regarding the SBF replacement for the Y-BLOCK-

Gear placement: 302 ford dimensions from bottom of distributor housing mounting flange to bottom of gear for all 289/302 distributors: 4.031"-4.038"

Gear placement: Y-BLOCK - from bottom of distributor housing mounting flange to bottom of gear for all y-block distributors: 4.991"-4.996".

This measurement can only be taken accurately with the distributor shaft pushed to the bottom and some type of straight edge clamped to the bottom of the distributor gear. Use a high-quality digital caliper.

A 302 distributor (SBF) housing fits the Y-BLOCK without a problem, but the shaft is .958" too short. If an attempt is made, the gear will not fit tightly. The Y-BLOCK shaft can be used to replace the 302 shaft if it is in good shape. The gear must run on the pad in the block with .008"to .012" end play or it will not live very long.

If you have one of the incorrectly assembled CARDONE replacement units (FORD-AUTOLITE-MOTORCRAFT SBF) (and they are sold under different vendor names), the shorter distributor shaft will pull the driven gear down causing damage to the inside of the distributor bowl.

The oil pump driveshaft length will also be affected.

Is the shaft pushed down into the housing as far as it will go?

There were some '64/'65 (???) Service Replacement distributors made for Y-blocks that use the newer style housing I see in your photo, but that may or may not be one of them.

12131 is the Casting ID for the distributor housing.

12127 is the Engineering Basic PN for a complete distributor assy_ In this example, the PREFIX and SUFFIX have been ground away as the assy does not have the original calibration as it is a reman. It will now work with many more applications (SBF).

Yes the shaft was pushed as far down as it would go by hand, there wasn’t much wiggle room, maybe 0-1/16”. I haven’t taken anything apart yet either. I plan on doing the swap and tuneup in the next couple of weeks so I can also reference the original dist. At that time
