1956 Carburetor

Trying to get my 56 road worthy. Seems to idle/run fine but stalls when accelerating under load. Almost seems like it is better when in reverse. I believe it is the stock 4bbl. Do most of you guys try to use these carbs or switch to something else? Worth rebuilding?? It was in storage for about 15 years. I have drained the gas, added fresh fuel with seafoam but that is it. Any advice would be appreciated.

That is actually a great little carburetor when it's working correctly. After sitting for 15 years I would expect the rubber and paper goods to be dried out and crumbly in any carburetor. Sounds like an accelerator pump to me. Get on line and Google Daytona Carburetor; they have ethanol resistant parts. Expect a kit to cost over $100.00, but worth it. As an alternative, there are people on the Ford Barn that will offer to rebuild it for you. Be sure you insist on ethanol resistant parts. I know some of them don't like the price of parts, but the soft parts will not hold up over time.

Also be sure to use an additive for ethanol fuels such as Lucas or Sta-Bil Marine gas treatment. This will protect those metal parts.

Thanks Motorhead. My buddy also thought accelerator pump. I checked out Daytona and they seem to have quality stuff. How tough is doing the rebuild? When I look at the diagrams of this carb, I see TONS of parts.

These are good carburetors, but they MUST BE REBUILT PROPERLY with QUALITY PARTS or you will have problems. Most of the "towering inferno" and "flamethrower" stories come from the misinformed or backyard monkey wrenches that have no idea how this carb operates, its nuances, much less the need to use quality parts so that ethanol will not have its crippling effect.

I have personally rebuilt several, but only for people I know.

I suggest you contact someone who is nationally known like Mike Suter up in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately I do not have his contact information with me right now.

Hello, I also agree with what most are saying that this is a good carburetor when done correctly. I would also make sure you're fuel tank, lines and pump are all free of water, dirt and old fuel before installing a fresh carburetor.
I can also help you out with a carburetor rebuild, or rebuild one of the cores I have. I have been doing these for 46+ years and know the natural flaws and how to correct any issues. I fully guarantee my work also.
I'm sure I can beat Daytona's prices by quite a bit, but not sure how much Mike Suter charges. He does seem to have a good reputation also.

There are also carb kits available that are 1/4 of the price of Daytona that also use alcohol resistant parts. If you need a secondary diaphragm it would be about $30 more. (Walker kit # 15136).

If you are interested in anything I can do for you, please PM me for more details.

I'll attach some pictures of my work.

Thank you, Sal Cicala.

I concur with HotRodReverend about the complexity of this carburetor. If you are not at least somewhat familiar with carbs, probably ought to turn it over to a professional as the reason Ford quit using this particular model is the fire issue. Fires come from leaks and that is something you could overcome. I guess most of the leaks are in the area of the feed tubes that have a mickey mouse way they seal.
