1956 & 57 v8 tach drive distributors

With the scarceness and cost of 57 tach drive distributors I am wondering if it's possible/feasible to purchase a rebuilt standard 57 dist ($60-80) and transfer the mechanical and vacuum advance mechanisms into a 56 tach drive dist?

There's a couple other ways out, if it's not a show car. I think Mallory still has a tach drive dizzy. It's expensive, and will require a new tach drive cable from the looks of it. No vacumn advance, so cruising milage will suffer.

I ran a 55 tach drive for years, using a modern carb. The dizzy advance was timed in and an MSD6AL unit with a timing computer hidden under the dash. It wasn't an optimal solution, as the computer would only allow 20* of retard, so with 10-12 initial, you were a bit short on total timing. I fitted a modern vacumn can, so I had more advance under cruise. But it worked pretty well, and since it was a blower motor, I also had boost retard. These days, maybe better more flexible computers are available.

Frankly, I wish I had just bit the bullet, and paid for a good OEM unit. If you want more info, send me a pm.

About 40 years ago I grafted the top part of a '57 housing to the bottom part of a '56 tach drive housing and grafted the shafts together to provide the tach drive gear location and make it the correct length. Been so long ago I don't recall exactly how I did it. Only downside was I destroyed a stock '56 tach drive distributor to do it. Have put about 150K miles on it with no problems. John

You might want to sell your 56 tach drive and buy a 57. If you would like to buy a 57 tach drive, pm me.

Mallory does not make the tach drive dizzy for a Y block any more. You may still be able to find one in a Tbird parts supplier. The cable needs an adapter for the Mallory.

I used a 90 degree half speed gear reducer and run it off the front of the crank bolt. Tach, cable, reducer, and adapter that I had a local machine shop make- about $125.00. Works great!!!
