1955 Mercury Question

All '55 Mercury's in the USA except the Montclair came with the 188 HP 292 Y-Block V8. The Montclair came with the same 292 as in the '55 T-Birds with 198 HP. (7.5:1 compression ratio compared to 8.5:1 in the Montclair).

My question is, did all '55 Mercury's come standard with dual exhausts, or was it just the Montclair ?

This may help answer your question. ???..The chart seems to be incomplete.
Scroll down at this link...

.....Mercury
Years.. Models.. Cubic inch.. Description........................ Part #..............Cast #

1954.... MB....... 256........... R.H. ................................EBY 9430-B
1955.... MC....... 292........... R.H. ............................... ECL 9430-A
1954.... MB....... 256........... L.H. use with dual exhaust.. EBY 9431-B
1954 ... MB....... 256........... L.H. ............................... EBY 9431-C
1955.... MC....... 292........... L.H. ............................... ECL 9431-A

The different compression ratio corresponds to different casting number heads.

YEAR CASTING # .....Cu.In. .Int. valve C.R. .H.P. . Carb. ...VEHICLES
55 ....ECK-A ECL-A ..292 ....1.78" ......7.6 ..188.. 4 bbl ...55 Mercury

55 ... ECK-C ECL-C ..292 ....1.78" ..... 8.5 ..198 . 4 bbl ...55 T-Bird & Mercury

... I'm sorry. I have been trying to cut down here but that cylinder head chart proudly proclaims-

Note: 6090 is Ford's number for cylinderheads. All heads will have this number somewhere. It is meaningless!
Meaningless?

Tell FORD ENGINEERING or a parts picker that 6090 is meaningless when asked to pull one.

"HEY!? Go pull me a EBU cylinder head".

Now which aisle does the puller start in?

I a$$-u-me the writer is saying 6090 is meaningless ID'ng a cylinder head by CASTING I.D. NO.

Guess he never came across 6049/6050...

OK... I have b!tched enough. I am out of here.

Yeah oldmics, I won't let the door hit me in the arse... :D

It happens pretty often. Folks selling (or looking for) used heads often don't know the '6090' is just a generic head number. Not realizing the prefix and suffix are the better way to ID the head for its application. .99.9% sure that was the intent of the statement.
There are 12 (ish) versions of a '55 head.

Here's an ebay ad for an example...

Dennis,

Thanks for this information. Since the one chart shows left and right exh. manifolds for '55 Merc dual exhaust systems, but doesn't list anything for single exhaust, I have to assume they all had factory dual exhaust. Not the same for '54 Mercury's though. They came standard with single exhaust systems.

all came with the duel manifolds but wheather they all had duels i cant say for sure.i had a 56 merc custom with single exhaust it crossed over under the car like all later ones did.

Thank you Darrell,

If '55 was like '56, then '55 Mercs probably had single exhaust on Custom's and Monterey's and used some type of Y-pipe crossover.

The Police Interceptor for 1955 for Ford's was the T-Bird 198 HP 292. Never saw one in a '55 car in my life, but they were made ("P" code on VIN). You could order Police Interceptor packages starting with the 223 six cylinder and all the way up. The package included other stuff besides the engine (like cooling upgrade, higher output generator, ect.)

Don't think Mercury had a designated Police Interceptor engine, except for the Montclair engine option in a lower trim car (198 HP 292).

That was the highest HP engine Ford made in '55 for Ford's and Mercury's.
