1955 ford problem

Hello: I have a 1955 Ford with a 292 4bbl carb. I have trouble with the car when I go and floor it. It starts to miss when on a roll and I floor it. It misses like mad . I don't feel the secondaries kicking in. Does that mean the fronts are wide open and without that boost from the secondaries the engine gets staved for gas. Anyone have any comments? DJP

Sounds like you need a carb rebuild? You might have a bad accelerator pump not spraying in the gas when throttle plates are open.

How are the points?, gap?, plugs?, gap?, timing? Any and all these things can cause the engine to not operate properly.

You have the worst carb Holley ever made on there, get rid of it. OMO ken ct.:)

I like my Teapot. It has worked good for two long trips (Oregon and Ohio from NJ) as well as much local traveling with no problems.

i have an edelbrock 1406 on my 55 merc 292 you may have to change out the distributor also i used a 62 292 ford p/u ordered from autozone rebuilt and loaded fro $65/70 dollars

A 500 cfm Edelbrock will give better low and mid range throttle response and fuel mileage. Always mount an Edelbrock on a spacer, they dont like heat.

Hello DJPINK1947,

If your car does have the old Holley teapot style carb (model 4000) I do agree that Holley could have come up with a less complicated design and better carb, however I have been doing these carbs since around 1968 and understand what it takes to make them work right. If you keep that carb to keep the car more original, it would be best to go back to the 1955 style distributor (Loadomatic) that does not have centrifigal advance, and only a vacuum diaphragm for the ignition advance. They are designed for the lighter vacumm signal on a T-Pot (taken from the venturi and not direct manifold vacuum). I can help you out with the carb work if you wish (also in MI, northeast of Detroit). If you want to keep the 1957 and later distributor, then your better off with another carb (500 CFM is plenty for a stock engine).

Hope this helps you out, Sal Cicala

Everytime I hear someone calling a Tea Pot a "Towering Inferno" it just cracks me up. I've never had one, but I know there are guys out there that get them to run pretty good.

Just a thought, I used to have problems with the vacuum advance. Same symptoms. Worth a check.
