1955 Ford Customline Distributor Timing

The stated timing for 1955 Ford Customline with manual/odrive is 3degrees BTDC. However its noted earlier timing is recommended. can you assist?

What economy should I expect with the 272 manual overdrive on highway cruising at around 60mph.

As having some problems with occasional lumpy idle which could be timing related?
 
no thats usually a carb of vacuum leak problem, but check compression on all cylinders, check points and gap, check plugs for carbon fouling and proper gap, they should not be black or wet
 
You can run 10 degrees w/a manual trans and 12 w/a automatic without any problems. End result will be more power & a better running engine.
