1953 Ford hood spring installation

Does anyone know the secret or special tool to install the round springs on the hood. I restored the car and the springs are not on correctly since they don't hold the hood open. I know this cause I have an original 53 ford that has the springs installed correctly from the factory. These are the springs that coil up.
Thanks ahead of time.

I had the same problem with the sedan delivery. The hood would not stay open. I cut about 1" off the hook end. Then reformed the hook. Support the hood in the highest open position you can get it and reinstall the spring. No tools required. I did mine by hand.

'53 Fords,
To correct this you have to preload the coil spring one half turn and slip it into the groove in the center. No need to CUT it. I did this on my '53. If I remember correctly. I used a bolt that I cut a slot in the end that was wide enough to slip the spring in about half way. With a vice-grip on the other end, wind the spring the half turn and push it onto the slotted stud. (do this with the hood propped fully open to reduce the amount of twisting you must do.) The cut in the bolt in on the END of it, not on it's side. Let me know if my description is not clear.
The tool should be engaged on the outer end of the spring and wound until the tail of the spring can be inserted into it's home position. I am incorrect in my first comment above saying to wind the spring and engage the CENTER, the center should be engaged first and the spring twisted near it's end. Sorry for confusion.
