starter motor looking in catalogues and talking to the cust ser im told there is a or some diff between an automatic and standart 3 on tree starter... looking in cat i can see starts for manual tran but not for automatic.. can anyone set me straight thanks dennis

The automatic starter has a special mount plate and I'm not sure but the shaft may be a different length.
They are available from time to time on Ebay or swap meets.
If it is rebuildable that may be the route to go.

The o-matic starters had some differences even though they shared a lot of parts. The drive was different (two types but interchangeable). The length of the armature shaft was different. The starter drive was retained with a pin so there was no woodruff key. The damn things are hard to find for the 1st generation transmissions. The starter ring is on the torque converter to it is a large diameter and very close to the mount opening for the starter so all the drive related parts were different.

I looked in a starter catalog and it shows the shaft for the MT is 6" and the
AT 5 3/16". The starter drive is the same as 1954-61 Fords.

I think the *** starter was adopted in the 1953 time frame and it was replaced by the FAJ according to my books but they should all be interchangeable clear back to the 1CM & FAE type begining in 1951 & on to 52 with Ford & Merc-o-matics. The next big changes were Y-blocks & 12-volt systems but they are different.
