Barners; Dos the draglink for a 52 F1 have a method to adjust the length? My draglink is a solid rod with no threaded length adjustment and model A type ends (spring loaded with ball cups). TKS, Jerry

My 1949 has no adjustment, my steering wheel is a bit off from changes. Not sure if I can remove the steering wheel and rotate it. I don’t see a key to stop me from doing it in the splines.

Mine looks like this, I was thinking of removing steering wheel and rotating it.

Most of the old Ford units weren't adjustable. The steering gear is set up with the worm master splined to the steering shaft to keep an alignment at center with the steering wheel key way on the top of the steering shaft. Later ones have a master spline rather than a woodruff key at the steering wheel. This also puts the sector shaft & pitman arm in a centered position if all is properly assembled and adjusted. The drag link and spindle steering arm will also be in centered positions once connected. The only adjustment other than steering box worm & sector gears is on both ends of the tie rod.

What problem are you trying to solve? (pictures sure help)
Have you installed the new draglink and adjusted it?
Adjust everything per a manual and then take additional steps below if required

As rotowrench has said there are few adjustments that you can make

- Steering wheel splines
- Tie rod which have LH and RN rod ends
- Pitman arm to steering box but will require that you grind the indexing tab on the arm ID
- Steering box to remove excessive free movement of the steering wheel

My drag link is a shown by Salty. There is no adjustment. It needs to be longer to index to steering gear. Changing the steering wheel splines changes nothing. JR

Not sure what you changed that it’s that far off. I contemplated haveing a machine shop cut mine in the straight area and have threads cut for a tube with left and right threads. After it’s adjusted I could get it welded up to be permanent. You could cut it slide a sleeve on, weld up the two original rods, then slide sleeve over weld and weld sleeve for extra strength.

- Turn the steering wheel until you can bolt up the drag link to your Pitman arm.
- Turn the steering wheel until the tires are straight ahead
- Adjust the steering wheel if required

Unless you don't have a stock F1 or you've done some modification to it, this will work.
