1952 F-1 trans

Hello all! I recently accuired a '52 F-1 with what appears to be a factory 3 speed w/ a floor shifter. Was this an option  , as I have only seen column shifters on the 50's Ford half ton trucks in the past. - Thanks

Column shift was only an option for 51-52 not 48-50. I have seen 3 different floor shift trans in the f1 trucks...3 spd light duty with synchros, 3 spd heavier duty with synchros and the 4 spd non synchro trans.

According to the 1952 Ford Salesman Data book, it states " Transmission- Standard equipment is a 3 speed synchro silent with shift on steering column. Optional is a 3 speed HD or 4 speed with 11" clutch and floor shift ".
Look under your truck and see what markings are on the transmission case. It can be identified by the markings. You could have a 3 speed HD or someone put an earlier light duty 3 speed in place of the column shift. Alot of time has passed since these trucks were new.

If first gear is non-synchro it sounds like you have the HD 3 which would have been floor shifted. Case number is T87D for this one.

They're bullet proof. I thrashed on one in a daily driver 48 for 10 years and only recently wore out the output bearing. Replacement was easy.

I thought the standard 3 spd was only synchro 2nd and 3rd as well.

I don't have one - so I'm just going by the shop manual, but it says the gears in the Light Duty 3 spd are "All Helical"

Also from the shop manual for F1 only
LD 3 spd floor shift was used in 48-50 (no column shift)
AND for 51/52 the LD 3 spd was column shifted with no floor shift option

51 PU definitely had the light duty floor shift as I have had many top loaders with the 16/27 gears that came out starting in 1951. Not sure about 1952s.

In mid 1950 is when the column shift was introduced. 51 was the same as 1952. If you had LD's floor shifts in a 51, then they were put in to replace the column shift. THat was the same time the smooth side beds were introduced also. Remember, alot of time has passed and many different owners have owned these trucks.

Yes, a lot of time has passed w/these trucks. I will look at the ****** casting # on mine tomorrow. Thanks guys !

None of them had a synchro'd 1st gear.

You're right - I just noticed my mixup in terminology.

I'll take the blame for screwing up that description in my first post. I was thinking helical vs. spur gear for first. My second post is correct according to the shop manual.

Time for another cup of coffee...........

1951 was the year that FoMoCo changed the gears to the late pattern gears, sometimes refered to as diamond pattern gears. This affected all models by mid 1951 production.
