1951 Merc wiring sizes

I plan on wiring my 51 Merc from scratch. I have the wiring diagram but does now show wire sizes. Anyone have a table or reference for the individual component wire gauges?

I recently researched '41 thru '48 Ford manuals and service bulletins I have regarding OE wire gauges and colors and prepared the attached "Tabulation Wire Circuits." I note it pertains to 6 volt systems and that I found only a few contradictions in the publications. Forum member JSeery also has some data on this subject.

If you are going to operate a 6 volt system this data should help you. You may also wish to either simulate the OE wire colorings or try to find someone who reproduces the colors/combinations.

Yea, I can post the diagrams again.

That chart/list Drbrown made is really cool. That is a lot of work, I know, I built something similar but not as elaborate.

The only ones I didn't see here are the turn signal diagrams and their interrelation to the brake light system. There are diagrams available on flea-pay that will have the colors but they won't have the wire sizes (most likely all 16 AWG). Larger gauges were used for the high current draw stuff as noted in the other documents. If you have electric overdrive, it uses larger gauges too.

Overdrive circuits .... I have a BW 10I OD and a 12 volt system. To avoid OD solenoid "holding" malfunctions due to current draw, it uses a 30 amp fuse and 10 gauge wiring. I suspect 10 gauge wire is okay for 6 volts as well.

Sidenote: Ground the OD housing directly to the car body/frame.
