1951 Merc elec fuel pump

Can I just run the fuel through the original mech pump from the Carter?

Yes, BUT! Need to be sure the mechanical pump has a good diaphragm in it the will hold up to modern fuel. If the diaphragm leaks fuel will be pumped into the engine ending up in the oil pan.

Ok, maybe just rebuild the carb and pump before trying to restart it?

Here is a pic of the 6v Airtex pump I installed on my "46. I only turn it on to "prime" the carb if the car has not been running for a number of days. A filter before the pump, gear clamps and threaded fittings are the way to go.
