1951 F1 Spare Tire Mount Hardware

Does anyone know where I can find the hardware to mount my spare tire carrier under the bed on my `51 F1? I bought a new carrier but I need the rest of the parts. If I remember correctly it has a wheel lug nut that supports the carrier. How about some pictures on how you mounted yours?

Thanks in advance for any help.

i bolt connects to frame u bolt connects to i bolt threaded end of u bolt accepts lugnut to support tire carrier. these parts can be found occasionally on internet auction sites. the carrier is still reproduced.

THe correct pieces have a short threaded loop that goes thru the frame and is held to the frame via a castle nut. The long bolt has an end like a clevis and has a pin that goes thru the piece I mentioned above so it can pivot. The lower nut is different from a lug nut, but you can use a lug nut in a pinch. THese are hard to find as most threw away the hardware. Took me a while to find what I have. I've attached 2 pics.

What size tire do you plan on putting under there? I spent quite a bit of time rounding up my hardware and freeing up the bolts, etc. Eventually I tried to mount my spare up under there one night and just laughed. I run 215/85/16 radials, and the tire was too wide and too tall. It was too wide for the hardware, and it hit my stock exhaust because it was too tall. Make sure your spare is as small as the original. Plus, I can't imagine trying to wrestle one of those spares out of there in a pinch after it rusts over again. Those fine threads are very hard to deal with if it's even slightly rusted. I think there is a really good reason a lot of that hardware got "lost".

There were 2 links available. One was 6 inches long and the other was 7-1/4 long. My pics are the 6 inch one. I'm going to run 6.00x16's on my truck so I can get it in the garage. With the optional tire ( 6.50x16 ) you had the longer link.

Shadetree, I sent you a PM.

I am running G-78-15 bias tires. Shouldn't be that much difference from a 600-16. I hope I will never have to use the spare tire but I want to drive this truck. I have seen side mounted spare wheels, that must have been an option.

On the 48-52 trucks, a side mounted spare was not an option. 53 and later had them, but not 48-52. It had to be a aftermarket add on or taken from a different series truck.

Thanks Barry. I must have been looking at a later model. I once owned a 1956 stepside with Twin I Beam suspension. Good truck, wish I had it back!
