Joey, This is a good site (below) to learn about your transmission. You are correct. Those levers move the forks that put the car in and out of gear.

Old Chiltons Manuals and Motor's Manuals will help also. The factory service repair manuals for a 1950 Ford will also have excellent info about tear down and assembly. If you can get a transmission to take apart you will enjoy seeing the mechanical magic of shifting. Take photos of the way the parts look in each gear and in neutral and so you can reassemble it.

The forward lever controls the 2nd-3rd shifter fork. The rear lever the 1st-reverse fork.. In stock position they are operated by the column shifter. If you install a floor shift kit, you'll need to invert the levers--point them up.

And...each has 3 positions: 2-N-3 and 1-N-R. One needs to be in N before the other moves. Stock, they are motivated by rods coming down from similar levers up on the steering column. And...that is NOT an 8BA trans at all, it is from a pickup truck. Innards are basically identical to '40-48 Ford, with either 28 or 29 tooth set in the various '42-50 models, different gears with different teeth angles '52-52.
Output shafts (there are 2 or 3 different ones) and tail casting differ from the ealier Ford transmissions.
