I would start with "ponymare's" approach. Then (back under the shade tree) While it is running I would spray some carb cleaner down the throat of the carb and rev the engine a bit. Might clean something out.
I worked in a shop when I was much younger and a man brought a Mercury Cougar in and said it was running rough. He left the car and the mechanic quickly removed the air cleaner, started the car, sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner down the carb while revving the engine. Smoothed right out. He used the rest of the carb spray to clean up the outside of the carb. When the owner returned he was amazed at how well the car now ran, paid the guy $20 and went down the road.
Oh the good ol' days!
