1949 overdrive question

I am looking to replace my current 3 speed trans. in my '49 with an overdrive trans. without much, if any, modification. If I can find a '49 overdrive trans. is it just a bolt on? Will a '50 or a '51 do just as well or will that involve more work and some modification?

49-50 (Not 51) 52-up to 56. Later trans will work but have fine spline tail shaft. 52-to 56 you need to use your side cover for clutch linkage. You can use 51 but need to work trans mount. You need to shorten drive shaft 1". Then you need control cable and switches and solenoid. You can make it work with cable and toggle switch.
