Okay, so. my dad and i have owned our 1949 ford for about 8 months, and ive been wondering... what exactly do the Parking lights do?

Parking lights simply glow when the headlights are on, and when the headlight switch is pulled out half way as well. They also will serve as turn signals if the car is so equipped.

My 41's only come on when switch is half way, when headlights are on they go off.I thought they were just to be seen when parked ,maybe on a roadway since it doesn't have hazard lights.

My 49 F1 headlights come on when the light switch is pulled out halfway and go off with the switch all the way out. I use them as indicators and put in some amber lenses to emphasize this.

49 parking lights are on when the switch is half way out. When the switch is full out, the head lights are on and the parking lights are off. End of story.

Some states had leagal requirements for parking lamps to be on when a car was parked along side a public roadway. This was many years before the 4-way emergency blinkers became a requirement. Many of the more modern 12-volt vehicles allowed the park lamps to stay on with the headlamps but the older 35-amp 6-volt systems are taxed any time an extra light bulb comes on so this was not common in that era.
