1949 Ford fuel pump

Is it worth trying to install a 49 combo fuel pump on on a 39 Ford, to utilize the vacuum pump for the wipers. Will the vacuum be more consistent compared to using the engine vacuum? And will the push rod be the correct length? What your thoughts?

Not sure if it would phisicly fit on there, there pretty bulky, but would solve you problem. Also the replace ment of the push rod will not fit as the 49 up has a bigger diam. thanthe older one[it wouldn't through the hole in the block] and its much longer too.Dont think its going to work. OMO ken ct.

The push rod will be the same, as both models had cast iron intakes. The installation must also include a vacuum tank to work as designed, and yes, the tank will make your wipers more consistent. My question is, if you've decided to modify, why remain loyal to vacuum?

Ken: Sorry, I shouldn't have been so damn sure of the pushrod!

The fuel pump bolt flange is different on the 8ba than the 39' bolt flange.
If you use the 8ba fuel pump tower then you lose the oil fill/breather.

The 49 up push rod is bigger diameter than the hole in the 39 block how are you going to solve that?? ken ct. Also its almost 2" longer and as mentioned the mount is longer on the Pump it wont seal correctly at the 39 oil fill. ken ct omo

What you need to do is find an old "BLACKSTONE" FP for an early engine and have it rebuilt They were made for the older engines and were dual action. Ive had a few of them in the past and should have had them rebuilt but at the time kits were not availible so i got rid of them. Havent seen one in yrs. Only way out that i can see.Check with John Plaskan he might have one or know where one is. 1-813-713-5820. ken ct.

The make alternaters with a vacume pump driven off the rear for diesels. I have several of them (not for sale) that look short enough to work on an old Ford. I'll measure one and see who makes them. The voltage regulator is for 12 volts but could be changed to 6, I don't know how easy it would be to reverse the polarity of the diodes. G.M.

The best solution, if you are committed, is what Ken mentioned---the old Blackstone pump. Some of the other advice ranges from good to ???.

It is correct to say the proposed(49-up) pump will not physically "fit" without using the coordinating(49-up) mounting stand. Not only is the flange mount different but the pump will not clear without being offset as with the 49-up stand. And, as stated above, the crankcase breather/oil fill will then be lost. There could easily be an extension added to the stock pushrod to overcome the pushrod problem but. as you can see, there are other problems. Too, there will be some fuel line challenges and minor, miscellaneous, items to deal with. The fact that both models have cast iron heads would seem to have no relevance in this discussion.

Thanks all, one those hair brain ideas. But where would be the world without them. Just resently found an NOS Trico wiper add on pump. It's wheel runs on top of the fan belt turning the pump. Straps on the generator. Just one more project, just what I needed. THANKSAGAIN for all the info and concern. Gordon

Ive had one of those belt driven wiper pumps, didn't look too practical so i got rid of it,maybe you were the one that bought it. LOL many yrs ago before even the original ford barn. ken ct.

Go on eBay and search for "alternator Isusu truck new" Here's a brand new 12 volt alternator with a vacume pump for $110.00 with free shipping. Looks like it would mount on an old Ford fairly easy. Also posible to switch to 6 volts. G.M.

You can switch the bottom 1/2 of the pumps, early short flange to a late long top 1/2,they interchange perfectly no problem there. ken ct.:)
