There may be some debris inside that rolls around until it gets drawn to the pipe. As far as I know there is no screen in there. You may have to removed the tank and clean it out. I've found all sorts of crud in the bottom of old fuel tanks. There can be varnish build up that gets pretty thick and when a piece breaks loose, it can do just what your ailment suggests.

rotowrench is correct. I had that problem. I would have to occasionally disconnect the fuel line and blow it out it clear out the scale and crud. But that was only a temporary fix. Just a reminder gasoline does not taste good. I finally gave up and replaced my gas tank.

If you go for a new tank and are not concerned with it being authentic, take a look at the poly tanks. They work very well. Some even have rollover valves in them.

Some Ford barners report success with using ethenol 15/85.
Remove tank. Put a gallon or so ethenol and a handfull of old bolts and nuts scerws etc.
Seal fill hole and fuel guage hole. shake and roll everything for a couple of days. Tank should be clean.

Works good
Lasts long time

You definitely have crud in the tank. I had the same problem some years back. I cleaned the tank and removed two coffee mugs full of rust and other debris. I decided on a new tank and never had another problem

There should be a plug on the bottom of the tank. You can drain through that and, if it's not too bad, fixes the problem.

I've cleaned and sealed tanks before but I don't trust sealers after a few horror stories. Now I just clean them and run a filter, or buy a new tank.
