1948 Ford Front Clip

I bought a Front Clip for a 1948 Ford F1 but the fenders at the back are approx. 3 1/2 inches thinner then my old fenders. I found this out when I went to cut the bottom 10 inches off to weld the Dennis Carpenter patches for the back of the front fenders the patch pieces hang over 3 1/2 inches. ANY IDEAS WHAT THESE FENDERS ARE FOR????
