1947 trunk lock cylinder

I read another thread indicating the key can only be removed in the locked position. Has anyone pulled the pin and rotated the activator 180° so the key can be removed in the unlocked position? The thing looks kind of fragile and I don’t want to do something I will regret.

Replacement locks you can buy now for the trunk are rigged so that the key can be removed either locked or unlocked. And they look original.
