I have a 1946 Mecury convertible with a broken speedometer.
Its the speed indicator that has broken just efter the spring.
I bought a used speedometer so i could repair the broken one.
The used one are functioning ok, but its a bit rusty and you can hardly see the colour on the dial face, and there is only a odomerter on it. On the original on my car are in much better shape and there are an trip odometer to.
Does anyone knows how to get the speed indicator of without breaking it.
I would like to keep the original dial face and "just" replace the speed indicator.
Sorry for my bad english.

Hammar,
I had to repair the odometer drive on the speedometer for my '46Super Deluxe Coupe, as it had quit working. Here is what I did to access it.
The speedometer housing was opened up by bending back the tabs on the chrome ring that are crimped over the back case. I held the speedometer shaft with very small long nose pliers, and gently pulled and turned the needle hub to remove it from the shaft. The speedometer mechanism is very delicate, so care had to be taken not to cause any force that would cause damage. Any changes to the alignment of the rotating parts, or bending of the hair spring, will cause failure of the instrument. Once the needle is off, the two small screws holding the face and rear housing were removed. The reel assembly can be removed by gently bending back the shaft retainer (it’s springy) on the non drive end of the reel assembly, and lifting it up.

If your repair gets to a stallmate there are a few people on the internet or here who repair them and/or sell repaired ones.

Rusty at Speedometer Service in Colorado might be able to help. He repaired the SW speedometer in my '39 p/u but he doesn't work on all the speedometers Ford used over the years. His service is top notch, prices and shipping reasonable, and the turn around time is fast. Worth contacting him IMO. He is also an Alliance vendor on the HAMB.
