1946 Ford Brake Master Cylinder Replacement

Hello, we have a brake master cylinder that is all rusted and leaking from the top. When you go to blead the line, much perculates from the top!

What is a great replacement for this type of master cylinder?

Looking for a dependable one to use!

The picture is an example, ours has the paddle removal on the top as this picture.

The compensating port should squirt some when pushing the pedal down at first movement—- that is normal
 
After leaving it sitting all night with the reservoir half full, it is still covered in brake fluid. Best to go with a new style or replace original style?
 
The rust is from not changing your brake fluid every couple of years. I'm guilty to as I'm getting older and having too many cars. You should make a habit of changing the brake fluid and the coolant every couple of years. If you change the brake fluid regularly the master cylinder and wheel cylinders will last a long-long time. Same with the coolant, it keeps the rust out of the system with a regular coolant change.

If your going to change your master cylinder it's probably a good time to inspect the wheel cylinders for leakages. You can slightly hone them and install new cups. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a single brake system if it's maintained. I was professional mechanic for the phone company for 30 years. Part of the servicing was to change the brake fluid and coolant every two-years. We kept vehicles for at least 15-tears, rarely did we replace wheel cylinders and master cylinders because we were changing the fluid every two-years.
 
There is no easy upgrade , but to use a new original style like the one you have . Available from 3rd Gen, Mac , Napa , and many more .
 
If the cylinder is half full and you let it sit and the top gets wet over time? Remove the cap and has the fluid level increased, is it now full of fluid. If so it would appear the check valve in the MC is not working properly. In addition make sure the MC is allowed to return to the full retracted position by the linkage that pushes upon the MC. If the MC does not return fully the MC will not allow fluid in the brake lines to return to the reservoir, it could be slowly leaking back.
 
If replacing the MC, be watchful of the screw cap on the new unit. Some of them are configured in such a way as to make adding fluid when installed nearly impossible.

I've reused the old cap to avoid the issue.
