1946 Drive shaft repair

Needing some advice, finding it very hard to find a good drive shaft over here.

The best shaft I have has the front section damaged where the roller bearing runs.

Is there a repair or sleeve arrangement that is being done to the front section where the roller bearing is running.

When fitting the spline to the rear of the drive shaft using the rivets are these heated then hammered or is it done cold. Can you use a bolt instead of a rivet if so what is begin done.

There should be no slop in the fit, and I tried a roll pin for convenience, it was shattered when I pulled it apart for something else. I used a piece of cold roll rod & belt sanded it until it was a hammer fit, peened it cold with backup on the head end. if it happened to be loose on either spline, the coupler seem's the soft part, wisely done by ford, replacements are reasonable priced.
I have a shaft that has wear on the bearing surface also, figured it would be a turn down & sleeve job or build-up with weld & turn or grind job. Since I haven't the tools I would let the machinist make that call. If he can't say the easiest/best fix off the top of his head, find one who can.

I used a grade 8 bolt and peened the threaded end a bit over the nut to insure the nut didn't work loose...

much talked about here previously, coupling that is. Don't know if it's too anal, but rather than hard bolt, my thought was to get the pin tight in the hole to prevent possable end movement, allowing wear. Thats why I sanded down the rod to be a driven in fit. Should have added the shattered roll pin was in a coupling that had an easy slide on fit. I was lucky enough to have a coupling that came off hard both ends, and went on my car hard, so no slop possable.

I am from New Zealand.

I have access to machine shop and welding equipment. Just needing info into what others have done.

If I weld and grind what type of welding is recommended. If I stick weld what type of rod to use. This heat will effect hardness of the shaft would i need to reheat treat the shaft.

Can you buy this shaft over there if so who would have if?

Thanks

Consider getting a new center support bearing and using a different part of the shaft surface to run the bearing on, there's plenty... Sorry, can't reccomend a source for the center support bearing... Karl

It is not the center support bearing already have one from Skip. It is the bearing at the U joint end by the speedo drive.

You can possible Hard Chrome the worn area and re-gring it. A good machine shop can usually take care of something like this or at least point you in the right direction. I do not think welding and re-grinding would work as you would need to re-heat treat this area.

My opinion,

Chris
