1946 axle shafts

I have broken a rear axle shaft in my 1946 Super Deluxe sedan and need to replace it.

I intend to buy a used axle and I am unsure how to identify the correct one. I know that the rear axle was made wider from 1942, so the axle shafts must be longer.

Is there a part number stamped on axle shafts and if so, what part number am I looking for? Alternately, how long should the axle shaft be from end to end?

I don't want to buy a great looking axle shaft only to find it won't fit because it belongs in a '39 Ford.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I have both nos and nice used axles for your car 21a-4235. Of course if someone has changedtherearendyou will need a different number

It's best to remove the axle, count the teeth and measure the length of the axle to be 100% certain what you have there to replace.
Fred (post #2) has both NOS and used... I'd suggest the NOS every time. Either way, you can rest assured whatever you get from him will be great.
