1946-1948 side trim hole dia?

I have a 1948 Ford that has had the side trim mounting holes filled in. I will install 46 side trim on the hood, doors, cowl and quarters but need to know the diameter of the holes for the trim clips and the center distance between holes on the hood, doors and quarter panels. I also understand that the quarter trim off a tudor will fit my convertible but will be a tad shorter, maybe an inch and a half or so, True? Thanks for your help.

The hood holes should be visible from the inside of the hood. The cowl holes should also be visible above the inside cardboard panel. The inside door panel will have to be removed to get at the door trim. However once you have found the cowl holes you can draw a line from the cowl hole to the center of the door handle. The door holes will be on that line. I think the inside door panel will have to be removed to bolt in the first fastener. The other ones will just snap in the holes once you clean them out. The quarter panel will be a challenge. Most can be seen if the trunk side panel is removed but the bolt clip may be at the front and now the armrest and side must come out. Tricky. Hope this gets you started.

Thanks John but the inside of the hood is finished, smooth and painted like the outside of the hood. My car is a show car but has had all trim removed. I don't need to find the exact hole locations because I don't want to drill thru the filler, whatever it is. I need to find a centerline for the holes which I can do after determining where the trim needs to go. The new holes for the clips hopefully will be next to or near the original hole location. The inside of the trunk is finished too. I will be drilling all holes from the outside after I tape off the area under the trim. I'll probably need to grind down the hole locations so I don't drill thru cured paint that can split and will use a stop so the drill does not penetrate more than 1/8" beyond the outer surface. Thanks for your help but all I really need is the hole diameter and the approx. center distance between them.

The best bet would be to find a 46-48 in your area and use it for a reference. If you have the Early Ford V8 membership book, there is probably someone in your area who has one you can look at and take the measurements you need for this project. Good luck.

Thanks for your comments. I have been waiting for three weeks to be able to see a completed 48 near here. This is a rural area and there are not many 46-48 around. Even when I do finally get to see the 48 coupe I still will not know the hold diameter or hole spacing.

Here's what I found out. There are eight holes total and the hole size is 15/64 but I bet you could get away with 1/4 inch. As you can see this hood has the original black so it's clear to see where the stainless goes. I'll be giving you the distance from one hole to the next just so you know. Starting at the back end of the hood the first hole is 1 1/4 inch, second is 5 3/4 inch, 3rd 7 3/4, 4th 7 1/4, 5th 7 1/4, 6th 7 1/2, 7th & 8th both 5 1/2.

If you have further questions send me a PM.

Chuck
