I'm looking for some seats for my 41 super deluxe. I really want the original look but mine are shot, the spring won't hold my 5 year old up. And I can't find anyone who will replace my spring so I've started looking for new.

The question:

Will 42-48 seats work? Some site say no some say maybe. Help me

Thanks

Greg

Can you add wire and stuff the springs with foam rubber?, you could probably make the other seats work, I looked at at mostly stock '41 with a modern Lincoln leather interior. Did you measure the seat from your '46 to see if it would work? Are you looking to restore your car to the way it rolled out of the factory in 1941.

Seat springs can get rusty and the coils or interconnect parts can break. The seats on the 41 are different than the 42 through 48 with some exceptions depending on the model since tudor sedans and fordors generally have different seats. Coupe front seats may be the same as the tudor sedan but I don't know for certain since some had different adjuster frames. There were two styles of coupe body in 1941. The body parts catalog for the 41 to 48 models would need to be consulted for parts numbers to see what crosses over and what doesn't. The 1941 model was a transition year so very little interchanges with previous years in the passenger cars and the 1942 cars were changed again but did use a lot more 1941 parts in their construction.

Seat springs can be rebuilt if they aren't totally rusted out. During the build up of a seat cushion, it gets more reinforcement by attaching burlap over the top of the spring assembly then further reinforcement when the padding and cover are installed so don't assume what you have is totally shot unless you have something to compare it to. Corvette8n mentions one way that the edges were reinforced except they used cotton batting back in the day instead of foam. This would stiffen up the sides for entry to the car where is gets collapsed a lot more and more often than the middle of the spring assembly. The coils were soft for a reason in order to make for a more comfortable ride on the roads of the day.

If your '41 is a sedan coupe the seats from the 42-48 sedan coupe or tudor sedan will work. The '41 body is the same as the 42-28 body. If you have the coupe that has the package shelf, the seat from the 42-48 "short door" coupe will work. If you don't care about being bone stock then measure your old seat and take those dimensions to your local Pick-N-Pull and find a modern seat that will fit. You can buy a seat (usually with good upholstery) for about $50.
