My Mercury Reference book says my 41 should hold 5 quarts. Oil was near low end of dipstick mark last night, so I decided to pick up some 10W30 today and start fresh with new oil. I had never changed it but does not get many miles.
Only ran long enough to back it out of the garage so it was not very hot, it was 90 degrees today anyway. I suspect I only drained about 3 quarts out, from the oil pan plug.
I slowly added oil, seemed to back up if I went too fast, even from quart bottle. Strangely, I saw vapors coming from bottom plug when it was out and the breather opening at top while I was adding.
Checked dipstick after adding only 3 quarts and it was right in middle of the normal zone. After a bit over 3 1/2 quarts I was at the full mark. My father in law was usually pretty particular about such things and I don't think he would have used wrong stick.
Did these engines hold a lot of oil that does not drain from the plug? I did not try to mess with screen, etc.
