Hi guys. I am thinking of putting a coil adapter kit on the stock 41 distributor . My question is do I need a ballast resistor ? I have seen some kits with them and some without . Also is there much Benefit to the coil adaptor kit interms of better starting etc. thanks for the help

It depends on the total resistance, coil plus ballest resistor. If the coil has the required resistance by itself then a ballast resistor is not used. The kit should make no difference at all in the starting

Might be easiest to send your coil to Skip Haney for rebuilding.
Then, no coil worries, no adapter, etc.

X2 Kahuna. If the stock coil is functioning correctly you will have no problems. Skip did mine about 10 years ago. Fires right up,no problems.

Thanks guys for the valuable info. So skip when he rebuilds the stock coil what does he do different or better. I won't go with the adapter I will let skip have at it. Once skip rebuilds it is it as good or better then buying a new stock coil from say macs etc?

It is light years better than anything the vendors sell from China. I don't know the specific details but he removes the old packing and windings. Replaces them with heavier windings and better packing. Trust me it's worth the cost. I'd never buy a new one from a vendor.

I can only speak to my experience. My car with OEM coil on it would only get 4 or 5 miles down the road on a hot day before the coil would stop working. I would have to let it cool before it would start and limp it back home. I had skip rebuild my coil and it worked flawlessly in the dream cruise...30 miles in stop and go traffic at 90+ temps. For me, the proof is in the pudding.

Skip responded to each of my emails, answered my questions and provided me with the information I needed to get my parts to him and returned. I was happily surprised at the turn around time for both my coil and water pumps. My coil was a week an I think my water pumps were 9 days. I have read old posts and know that there's been some bickering, and I can only speak to my experience, but I'm happy to give kudo's where kudo's are due. I am personally 100% satisfied with the work that Skip did for me.

I do a good bit of driving in my 35 fordor sedan, and I would not think of going any further than within sight of the end of my driveway without having a rewound coil by Skip Haney fastened to the top of my stock helmet distributor. Wire insulations used 80 + years ago were way inferior to the wire insulations we have today. The original coils work ok when cool, but by the time they reach engine running temperatures, those coil wires begin shorting out,-causing weak spark at the plugs and a poor running engine.

That was my experience. Car would start good cold and progressively the running would deteriorate each mile till it quit. Allow it to cool and it would run but not great but enough to get back home. Last year, I ordered a new coil from a well known parts supplier because I wanted it quick so I could do last years dream cruise. I still haven't got that coil even though it was listed on their web site. After waiting for that new coil, I shipped my old one to skip and had it back in a week. Had I done that initially, I would have made last years cruise. I'm learning.

Hombre.......I bought one of those kits when I was having the same problems you are. It did help, but it was not perfect. I had a coil rebuilt by Haney and it really runs great and that was 4 years ago. No problems at all.
