Anyone have any good pics of a 41 woodgrain dash and know how they were painted.I can se a little of mine but at some point it was painted over with brown paint worse yet it looks to be done with a brush.

41Fordor had some pics on in november of last year you should be able to look them up here on the barn. He did a beautiful job on his dash.

They were straight walnut grain, not much wiggling in it. Try Grain It Tecnolagies" for pics. ken ct.

Not sure how good the picture will come out or if it will help but it's from the "1941-48 Ford Book" put out by The Early Ford V-8 Club of America.

The deluxe model used a Kelobra grain and the standard mobel used an Ebony grain, which was a litter color in a straight grain pattern. Hope this helps

Fibber, Give me a couple of days to take pictures of dash and window mouldings. I'm doing a frame off resto of a 41 tudor and just disasembled the dash to be redone but the parts are in my fathers garage. I'll post as soon as I can! Hope this will help.

Here is a picture of my 41 convertible's dash during my restoration last year. This should be the correct woodgraining pattern for a '41. My wodgraining was done by Grain-It Technologies. They do great work. Scott

As a follow-up on my last reply, please note that if you are doing a concourse restoration, the steering wheel horn ring in my picture is incorrect (the one shown is a 46-48). I have since replaced it (I'm sure someone here would have called me on it.)

My new picture below shows my finished dash with the correct horn ring and new speaker trim -- it is just harder to see the woodgraining in this picture.

I noticed you had to find another center chrome piece too! My early 41 had the short piece, I found the longer one on that auction site.

Beautiful car BTW!

Can't go wrong with Grain it Technologies! Evin can set you up with the proper graining plates, base colors and ink. Great product!

Thank you for the compliment. I spent 4 years on the restoration, so I appreciate it. If you have any other '41 (or 41-48) questions, let me know. I am working on a '47 Woodie right now, but hope to do another 41 in the future. Good luck with yours!! Scott

Hi,
i am in the slow process of restoring my 41 convert. Too. Here is just a few things i found during my restoration:

Ford purchased at least two types of horn rings.
The first one didnt have the reinforced 6 oc spoke. The second one had an extra glob of zinc at the 6 oc position. Think this modification was to prevent spoke cracking.

My windshield center bar is cast iron. I think using cast iron was somewhat unusual and i wonder if this was normal for our 41,s?

The rear fenders for 41 station wagons are just a little longer than all of the rest of fords 41,s. Same is true for the stainless steel fender trim.

Some 41 clocks have the stem sticking out in front and some were found inside of th glove box...

Not all radios have provisions for the foot controled station selecter.

Bumper wingtips only fit super de luxe 41,s other wing tips were for only the de luxe cars

be careful and don,t use a v-s hood emblem. The v-8 emblen wes installed only after ford introduced the six cyl, engine.

The short, 18inch stainless steel trim that mounts just under the headlights arn,t interchangeable left to right.

I am not sure of this but i think not all 41,s have trip meters installed in the speedometer.

Late late center grills were made from stamped steel, not zinc. Save the zinc for ww-ii

if you have some questions, just let me know.

Al

Fibber, Here are the pictures I promised. This is the original factory wood grain. What a challenge it is to download pictures when your a computer dummy!!! Hope this helps,

Thanks everyone for the advice and thanks for the pics ,that looks like what is under the paint on my dash Jeff.I'm not going for concourse restoration Scott,I just want to drive it but I would like it look original where I can. Also Big Al mine has no trip meter on speedometer but does have odometer and also mine has three piece front fenders ,I'd read that later 41s had 2 piece has anyone ever heard this.

My Super Deluxe was built in Oct 40 and has three piece front fenders. Not really an issue since there's no repop sheet metal anyway. It also doesn't have the stainless trim on the front or rear fenders. Fine with me, less to buff and polish!

Fibber - You have an early 41 Ford. Check your window bugs for the exact date if your windows are original. Per The 41-48 Ford Book by the Early Ford V8 Club, Ford switched from the three piece to two piece fenders on vehicles produced after December 12, 1940. The early vehicles with 3 piece fenders typically did not have the stainless steel trim on the fenders either. You can see a timeline of the changes in Appendix D of the book.

Al - Thank you for all the info. Through my four year restoration process, I stumbled across much of what you mentioned, but was unaware of some of the details, especially as it related to the horn ring.

On my convertible, the inner center bar of the windshield was actually made of what looked to be cast brass. Is this the part you said was cast iron? On my woodie (I actually have both a 47 and 41, but I am working on the 47 first), the center bar is pressed steel, like the sedans. I'm guessing the cast piece is for greater structural integrity on the convertible. Any thoughts? I also was missing the small upper and lower center trim pieces that cover the ends of this. Fortunately, I found someone on the internet that made reproductions.

I actually have multiple 41 clocks, but chose to restore and use one of the stemless clocks, so as to avoid cutting a hole in my plastic dash trim.

The dash and instrument cluster that came with my 41 convertible did not have a trip meter, but my 41 woodie originally had one.

Hi,
here is my second attempt to send this. This electronic thing loves to eat my messages.
Ford made three types of
ford emblems for 41,s. The first was a small one, just about as long as your little fnger.
It is mounted on top of the radio grill and is horizontal
the second is bigger and about as long as your trigger finger and mounted down half way down over the grill.

The third is simular to the second, but longer and it extend all of the way down to the bottom end of the radio grill.

The second one was replaced by the third one during the so called mid year change.

When one orders a set of plastic dash pieces, be sure to order the one for a clock. When it arrives, you should see that it has a cut-out for a clock stem regardless if the clock has it,s stem inside or outside.

Ford made two types of top motor motor/jack screws for our 41,s. If and when you restore yours, let me know and i will take you step-by-step in it,s restoration.. I hope this helps some. Tke care.

The wood grain pics were great. Thanks as I am also doing a '41. I have the 3 piece front fenders too. My plastic part of the dash trim is split next to the glove box, not in the center like all the pics I see. Was this also a very early design? Bob A

HI ftda0704,
THE PLASTIC INST. PANNEL CAME IN THREE TYPES

THE FIRST WAS THE ONE FOR A CLOCK

THE SECOND ONE HAD NO CUT-OUT FOR A CLOCK

THE THIRD ONE WASNT PLASTIC, IT WAS CAST OUT OF POT METAL AKA ZINC
IT WAS ALL ONE FIECE AND
