I cannot answer with absolute certainity. My 65 289 went in with the stock steering box, but the exhaust manifold was very close to the steering column. I doglegged the exhaust pipe for clearance. My engine was mounted forward in order to not cut the firewall----this meant that the water pump needed to be the "short" style and the mechanical fan was very thin----which meant the fan was not very efficient.
Once I got the car on the road, I found the original steering was old, very loose, etc. and I replaced it with a Saginaw box from a 66 Chevelle---much smoother and easier to turn because of the recirculating ball system.
