1940 Pickup - Stake Pockets

I was looking at the reproduction stake pockets for my pickup truck, and I noticed they are not the same as the originals.

At the top of the stake pocket there is a round hump and on every picture I can find of original trucks from 40-47, that hump was not there.

I wonder why they put it there? What model truck were these actually made for?

Also the stake pockets are wrong, the angle is off.

See pictures.

The bottom of the stake pocket looks normal enough to me.

Who knows why they did it. Its more work to add that big hump to the mold.

I checked in the books I have showing original trucks from 40-47 and an original 40 box in a scrap yard.
They definitely aren't the same as original.

Who knows, maybe they made one mold to fit the dodge/chevy or international harvester and just sell them as ford.

My 1940 to 1947 hulks beds have definite humps, but much smaller and flatter than the ones in your repro. My 1950 hulk have the large hump like the one in your repro and the one Mack's reproduces.

Note there are/were at least two reproductions, Mack Hils (Mack's) and Tod Murthum's (Northern Classic Trucks).

Photos.
1 1938-41 bed, unknown exact year.
2. 1942-47 bed.
3. 1950 bed.
4. Mack's repro stakepocket.

The hulk pickup are part of our "reference library". It's now time to re-home them. Everything is best described as "rough". 500.00 to 1500.00 each. One 1940, 2 1942-47's, 1 1950, 1 1953, 1 1939 Tudor.
Also, 1 1938-41 crashed bed in pieces, 1 1951-56 bed converted to trailer, 1 1936 cab (really rough), 1 1934 cab, 1 1939 pickup cab, 1 1940 station wagon cowl and floorpan, 1 1935-36 station wagon floorpan, 1 1947-48 fordor body (no frame).

Karl,
That's interesting. My 1950 is mid year production, so it has the square stake pockets.

Maybe they changed the style to include a larger hump right at the end of production of the older bed.

I don't know what year or manufacturer produced my stake pockets, they came as part of a project truck. Likely bought in the late 80s or early 90s. The angle at the bed side lip is wrong on the ones I have.

The 1940 bed I found had no visible humps on the stake pockets, but I'm in Canada so they may be slightly different than the ones in the USA.

My 41 is original and it has the hump ,although not as big as the one in question. On another observation Karls second picture shows wha apears to be a stock drivers side spare tire mount .
it looks to be a much better mounting then my stock passenger side mount that tears up the bed side with viberation.

That is 1942-47 practice.

Hello, I have attached a pic of my repo stake pocket along with an original. I did consider altering my repo ones to look like the original but decided against it. They seem to fit ok. Don't forget to rivet the chain bracket before attaching the stake pocket to the deck.
