every supplier seems to be out of stock. While I wait for new production, is there an alternative, or one for sale. This mounts rear of muffler & tail pipe on '40 sedan.
thanking you in advance, Don 508-362-9234

Dan, The 11a clamp is not correct for 1940. Even though most repop suppliers say it is correct, the fact that the prefix is 11A tells us quite clearly it wasn't around in 1940.
Carpenter sells the correct part 99a-5261. If total correctness matters to you (it sounds as if it does not) then you'll need to paint or plate the clamp black. The way it is supplied in cadmium (zinc no doubt) is incorrect.

Hi Kube, The green book has the 11A-5259 clamp (muffler outlet pipe front) as '39 to '41. The 99A-5261 clamp (muffler outlet pipe rear). The drawing shows the 11A upside down. At least on this '40, there is a I inch wide strap across the bottom of the frame, to which "the" clamp is bolted.
I'll try the 99A, though the pipe clamping nut would be high up to reach.
Thanks, Don

Don,
One must always keep in mind the parts books offered service parts that would fit and function. Not necessarily "correct" but they would fit and function.
The 11a clamp is such a part. The part I led you to is correct for your '40 except the metal finish.

For sevice related info, the big book is fine. You need to know your prefixes as you read, so that anamolies like that "11A" catch your eye! For resto you MUST have the parts book published in the year of your car, so you know what what what. As time passed, many parts were dropped from the parts list and replaced with later parts that fit and functioned but were not identical to original.
Of course no source can be perfect...parts were dropped and replaced with updated versions DURING 1940, and 1940 parts were manufactured by Ford and its suppliers LONG after 1940 to keep the parts business running. These latter parts kept their original numbers but were often altered in appearance...famously, a sought after type of 1940 radiator that appeared as NOS turned out to be utterly unlike versions used during production...

x2 on Bruce's comment. This goes for all years, not just 1940, yet guys continue to cite the green bible to authenticate parts.

Try Collectors auto supply in Oroville, WA., they show 5 of 99A 5261. Ph is 800-414-4462. Don't say if they're NOS or repo. Carpenters show 256 on the shelf. Their inventory control must be severely lacking for that discrepancy!
